Patients often ask us about dental x-rays. Why do we take them regularly? Are they really necessary? At Jarrettsville Family Dentistry, we focus on prevention and catching dental conditions as early as possible. Regular digital dental x-rays are an important part of the process.

Why Do I Need X-Rays?

While Dr. Stern can diagnose many oral conditions using a visual inspection alone, decay and infection are not always visible to the naked eye. With dental x-rays, we can see beneath the surface of your teeth to get a more accurate view of your oral health.

When we can catch and diagnose common dental conditions such as decay in its earliest stages, we can treat them quickly, often saving you time and money. By treating dental conditions while they are small, we may be able to help you avoid more complex and invasive treatment in the future.

For your convenience and safety, we use digital dental x-rays in our Jarrettsville, MD dental office.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Dental x-rays have always been among the lowest in radiation. We are imaging a very small area and always protect our patients from excess radiation with a lead apron and neck cuff. With the implementation of digital dental x-rays, we reduce the amount of radiation even more – by 80-90 percent. This means that you often absorb more radiation just by being outside than you receive from routine x-rays.

If you have questions about the necessity of dental x-rays or the safety of the equipment in our office, we are always happy to share that with you. We simply want the best for your oral health, and digital dental x-rays are one of the best ways to achieve early diagnosis, making them a good investment in your care.

Frequency of Dental X-Rays

How often you need dental x-rays depends on your current level of oral health. Do you have a lot of dentistry such as crowns, bridges, or fillings? Do you have cosmetic dentistry? We may need to take them more frequently to protect your investment and keep decay at bay.

If you have few dental problems, you are a young patient, or you have no history of dental decay, we may be able to take them less frequently. We always tailor our treatment to meet your unique needs. We never offer one-size-fits-all dentistry.

We can discuss your individual needs and the best way to protect your oral health at your next dental exam.
